Managing Aggression & Oppositional Behaviour Through Structured Behavioural Intervention
To protect privacy, identifying details have been withheld or modified. This case study is shared for educational purposes while respecting the child’s confidentiality and dignity.
Helping with aggression, oppositional behaviour, emotional regulation, self-control, cooperation, and following instructions.
The parents reported that the child is exhibiting anger, oppositional talk and behaviors, intentionally harms others, and intentionally destroys property whenever his needs are not met and when something is said by the parents to obey.
It took too much time to build therapeutic compliance with the child. The child was adamant and difficult in sessions. The child showed behavioral issues like throwing objects, oppositional talk, and harming behaviors in the sessions, and seemed to be non-cooperative in participation in tasks.
A structured intervention plan was prepared and informed to the parents about the plan, and consent was taken from them.
The strategies included:
-Building therapeutic compliance
-Structuring routine
-Relaxation training
-Differential reinforcement to enhance desired behaviors
-Time-out and negative punishment strategies for undesirable behaviors
-Antecedent modification
-Modeling and prompting desired behaviors
-Parental management training by giving proper and minimal instructions and providing the adequate reinforcement strategies
Progress
Outcome
The child is able to react calmly in situations which once were provocative for him. Intentional desctruction and harming behaviors are significantly reduced and started complying with rules and following instructions in a better manner.
Family Impact
The child is cooperating with the parents and complying with the rules at home. The parents are able to understand his emotions and they can help him manage his impulsivity effectively
Key insight
A structured and consistent therapeutic approach implemented with the help of parents resulted in the management of the behavior issues reported
